Roman Room System (Loci)

Identify objects in a well-known room and associate the grouped information inside the room’s context. Grouped Information (better for information where order is not important) Novice

Number/Rhyme

Rhyme each item’s number in a list with a vivid image. Associate the image with the item to be remembered. Ordered Lists, 1-10 or 1-20 Intermediate
Number/Shape Identify a shape which looks like each list item’s number. Associate the shape with the item to be remembered. Ordered Lists, 1-10 Intermediate
Alphabet Technique Identify a word which begins with the same sound as each letter in the alphabet. Associate the word’s image with the item to be remembered. Middle-Length ordered lists, up to 24 items (A-Z) Intermediate

Keyword System

From neuroMod: This is the most basic technique. More on the keyword / elaboration system at neuroMod.

Link & Story

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: A mnemonic link system is a method of remembering lists, based on creating an association between the elements of that list. For example, if one wished to remember the list (dog, envelope, thirteen, yarn, window), one could create a link system, such as a story about a "dog stuck in an envelope, mailed to an unlucky black cat playing with yarn by the window". It is then argued that the story would be easier to remember than the list itself. More on the mnemonic link system at Wikipedia.

Journey System

From MindTools: The journey method is a powerful, flexible and effective mnemonic based around the idea of remembering landmarks on a well-known journey. More on The Journey System at MindTools.

Roman Room, Loci System

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The method of loci (plural of Latin locus for place or location), also called the memory palace, is a general designation for mnemonic techniques that rely on memorised spatial relationships to establish, order and recollect memorial content. Rhyming, Peg Words (1-20)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: A peg system is a technique for memorizing lists. It works by pre-memorizing a list of words that are easy to associate with the numbers they represent (1 to 10, 1-100, 1-1000, etc). Those objects form the "pegs" of the system. Then in the future, to rapidly memorize a list of arbitrary objects, each one is associated with the appropriate peg. Generally, a peglist only has to be memorized one time, and can then be used over and over every time a list of items needs to be memorized. More on the mnemonic peg system at Wikipedia.

Description of the Alphabet Peg System

From MindTools: The Alphabet system is a peg memory technique similar to, but more sophisticated than, the Number/Rhyme system. It is a good method for remembering longer lists of items in a specific order, in such a way that you can tell if items are missing. It works by associating images representing letters of the alphabet with images you create for the things to be remembered. More on The Alphabet Technique at MindTools.

Major System

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Major System (also called the phonetic number system or phonetic mnemonic system) is a mnemonic technique used to aid in memorising numbers. The system works by converting numbers into consonant sounds, then into words by adding vowels. The system works on the principle that emotive images can be remembered more easily than numbers. Effective Memorization

Whether you’re trying to memorize dates for a history final or struggling to remember the names of all the new pledges for your fraternity or sorority, improved memory can enhance every aspect of your life.

As the folks at MindTools tell us, "our brains evolved to code and interpret complex stimuli such as images, colors, shapes, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, positions, emotions and language." Unfortunately information we have to remember is almost always presented in only one way - as words printed on a page. While language is one of the most important aspects of human evolution, it is only one of the many skills and resources available to our minds.

Mnemonics are memory tools that allow you to use your whole mind to store and recall information. By coding language and numbers in striking images, you can reliably code both information and the structure of information.
